Preparing to move can be stressful, but having a plan will make the experience simpler and stress-free. Use this helpful checklist to stay on track and be ready for moving day!
Start by purchasing moving boxes and packing supplies from your local TWO MEN AND A TRUCK(r). Organize each box by room for easier reassembly.
1. Packing
Moving can be an anxious time. That is why having a plan in place when packing and transporting can make the experience less arduous.
As soon as you decide that it’s time to relocate, take an inventory of everything you own that you will be taking with you. Explore every room and identify what should stay with you as well as which items could go. Consider giving any no longer needed items away to those less fortunate in need.
Once you know what items will accompany you on the move, begin packing them up in boxes. Make sure each is labeled with its intended place at your new home and be sure to wrap any fragile objects securely using blankets or paper. Also ensure you remove legs off chairs and sofas and tape power cables to each item – this will prevent any mishaps during transit.
2. Cleaning
On the day of your move, be sure to wake up early and ensure your floors are spotlessly clean from top to bottom – this will allow you to easily protect the new floors of your new home and give movers (if applicable) tips!
Before the move, it is also wise to declutter and minimize belongings by getting rid of things you no longer use, such as old mugs or stacks of cutting boards that no longer serve you. By discarding them now you will save space in your moving boxes while leaving more room for essentials in your new home. Cleaning can help ensure you receive back your security deposit from landlords as well.
3. Moving Day
Your moving day has finally arrived! After months of careful preparation, now’s the time to ensure everything runs smoothly. Wake up early and clear a path for the movers; also set aside one or more empty boxes with toiletries, snacks, and coffee that may come in handy immediately.
Notify employers, credit card companies and subscription services of your move as soon as possible. Update your address in driver’s licenses, passports and bank accounts accordingly. If changing doctors, arrange to have medical records sent directly or obtain copies yourself.
Make sure to tip your movers! They work tirelessly to make your move go as smoothly as possible, so be sure to show your appreciation with a thank-you tip when the job is complete. Host a housewarming party and give each of them something (even just M&Ms!) They’ll never forget your kindness in years to come!
4. Unpacking
Once you’ve successfully navigated moving day and found yourself settled into your new home, unpacking should become your top priority. Start with bedrooms and bathrooms; having bedding, toiletries and shower curtains all prepared makes your first night in your new space that much more relaxing.
Make sure you keep an essentials box (or two) close at hand with essential items you will need in the short term, such as medications, basic toiletries, bedding and towels – this way if you find yourself feeling worn-out by moving, these pieces can help restore some sense of normalcy.
As you pack, make sure all boxes are clearly labeled with what room they belong in and the contents. Doing this will save a great deal of time and frustration later – it makes tracking progress simpler so you know when what needs to be completed and by whom.
